Ask the Expert discussion on World Cancer Declaration Target 4
Deadline for participation 02 October 2009
The UICC Community Ask the Expert
discussion would like to hear from you about national HPV and HBV vaccination
programs available in your country and to allow others learn from experiences
in this respect.
For your convenience, we have prepared a set of suggested questions for
each type of infection, HPV and HBV, and a general question regarding UICC
World Cancer Campaign in 2010.
We have selected an Expert who will respond to your responses and comments on
each group. Our Experts for this discussion are Dr Vivien Davis Tsu, for HPV,
and Steven Wiersma for HBV infection.
We welcome your comments on the following questions:
...on HPV infection
1. What are the key barriers and challenges, in
your opinion, to integrating a HPV Vaccination Program in your
National Immunization Plan?
2. What types of resources would be most helpful in
overcoming these barriers?
3. What are the next steps you envision happening in your own country with
regard to HPV vaccination?
...on HBV infection
177 countries have childhood national immunization programs for HBV. However,
there are still important barriers to maintain these programs, improve the
awareness and access to information and increase the coverage.
1.
How important are educational programs in hepatitis
prevention in your country?
2.
It is said that globally, about 20% of all hepatitis B
deaths occur due to infections occurring at the time of birth. WHO has recently
called for all infants to be immunized with hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours
of birth. How can this be implemented in your country?
3.
Despite 177 WHO member states now having routine
infant immunization, many older children, adolescents and adults are still at
risk of infection. What is the role of vaccination of older age groups?
4.
It has been estimated that 350 million persons are
chronically infected with hepatitis B virus. Can screening and treatment be an
option for these millions?
A question for all participants
2010 World Cancer Campaign will focus on cancer-related infections. What do you
see as key messages and activities that would support advocacy and awareness
towards achieving and maintaining HPV and HBV immunization programs?
We look forward to your participation in this discussion!
